Life Before Search Engines
In the early days of the Web, there was no Google or Bing.
People usually discovered websites by following links from other websites, reading online directories, or receiving recommendations from friends.
Another common method was to manually type the address of a website into the browser if they already knew it.
As the number of websites increased, these methods became slower and less practical.
A better solution was needed.
The First Search Engine
One of the earliest search tools was Archie, created in 1990 by Alan Emtage while he was a student at McGill University in Canada.
At that time, the World Wide Web had not yet become popular.
Archie did not search web pages because very few web pages existed.
Instead, it searched lists of files stored on FTP servers, helping users locate software and documents available on the internet.
Although simple by today's standards, Archie introduced the idea of automatically searching information stored on computers connected to the internet.
Search Engines for the Early Web
As websites became more common, new search engines appeared.
Veronica and Jughead were introduced in the early 1990s to help users search information stored on Gopher servers, another popular internet service before the Web became dominant.
Later, search engines began focusing on websites instead of file servers.
Some of the most important early web search engines included:
WebCrawler (1994), one of the first search engines to index the full text of web pages.
Lycos (1994), which quickly became one of the largest search engines of its time.
AltaVista (1995), known for its speed and ability to search millions of web pages.
These search engines made it much easier for users to find information without knowing the exact address of a website.
Yahoo! and Web Directories
Yahoo! was founded in 1994.
Unlike modern search engines, Yahoo! originally worked as a web directory.
Instead of automatically discovering websites, people manually organized websites into categories such as News, Education, Sports, Technology, and Entertainment.
Users could browse these categories to find websites related to their interests.
As the Web continued growing, manually organizing millions of websites became increasingly difficult.
Yahoo! later added its own search engine features to help users search more efficiently.
The Birth of Google
By the late 1990s, the Web had grown so large that existing search engines struggled to provide the most useful results.
In 1998, Larry Page and Sergey Brin founded Google while they were graduate students at Stanford University.
Instead of simply counting how many times a word appeared on a webpage, Google introduced a new ranking system called PageRank.
PageRank evaluated the importance of a webpage by analyzing how many other websites linked to it and how trustworthy those linking websites were.
This often produced more relevant search results than earlier search engines.
Because users could find useful information more quickly, Google became extremely popular.
How Search Engines Work
Modern search engines perform three main tasks.
Crawling
Search engines use automated programs called web crawlers or spiders to discover webpages by following links from one page to another.
Indexing
After discovering a webpage, the search engine analyzes its content and stores important information in a massive database called an index.
Ranking
When a user enters a search query, the search engine examines its index and ranks the most relevant webpages using hundreds of factors.
The results are then displayed in order, with the pages considered most useful usually appearing near the top.
This entire process often takes less than a second.
The Growth of Modern Search Engines
As the internet expanded, search engines became much more advanced.
They learned to understand different languages.
They began recognizing spelling mistakes.
They could search for images, videos, news articles, maps, and products.
They also started considering factors such as webpage quality, loading speed, mobile compatibility, security, and user experience when ranking results.
Today, search engines use artificial intelligence and machine learning to better understand what users are searching for and to provide more relevant results.
