What Is a Website?
Lets understand what a website is with an anology. Imagine you own a house.
People can visit your house, walk through different rooms, and look at different things inside it. A website works in a very similar way. Instead of a physical house, it is a collection of web pages that people can visit using the internet. For example,
Your house has:
- A living room
- A kitchen
- A bedroom
- A bathroom
Similarly, a website might have:
- A Home page
- An About page
- A Contact page
- A Products page
- A Blog page
Each room in a house has a different purpose. Each page on a website also has a different purpose. When all these pages are connected together, they form a website. Let's look at some real examples.
If you visit Amazon, you'll find many different pages:
- Home page
- Product pages
- Shopping cart
- Login page
- Orders page
All these pages together make up the Amazon website. The same is true for YouTube. It has,

- Video page
- Search page
- Channel page

- Subscription page
Every page has a different job, but together they form one website. A website is simply a collection of related web pages that are connected together. Think of it like a book. A single page is useful, but a book contains many pages. Similarly,

For example, imagine you create a website for your bakery. It could have these pages:
Home: Visitors learn about your bakery and see featured products.
About: People can read the story of how your bakery started.
Menu: Customers can see cakes, cookies, bread, and prices.
Gallery: People can look at pictures of your baked goods.
Contact: Customers can find your phone number, email address, and location.
Each page serves a different purpose, but together they create one complete website. Now you might wonder where websites live. A website is not stored inside your computer. Instead, it is stored on a special computer called a server. The server stays connected to the internet all the time so people around the world can access the website whenever they want. Whenever someone opens your website, the server sends the website's files to their browser. The browser then displays the website on their screen. We will learn about servers and browsers in detail in next lessons.
Can a website have only one page?
Yes. Some websites consist of only a single page. These are called single-page websites.
They are commonly used for:

However, larger websites usually contain dozens, hundreds, or even millions of pages.
For example:

A website can do almost anything.
